So far this January we have only had one evening of clear skies and the outlook for the next week is not promising. In the meantime, I have spent many hours searching my captured star fields for anomalies of any kind, discovery being my main interest as a scientist.
I’ve been adding new items to my website (see below) about every other day, and just now I uploaded an Origin 1.27° x 0.85° field of view (FOV) centred on the UGSS cataclysmic variable SS Cygni. This image was taken on 20 October 2024 using 10-second exposures and 10-minute total integration time. No editing was done. It is a downloadable pdf file.
Origin can easily capture visual magnitudes as faint as 20 here on my sheep farm in rural Nova Scotia where Bortle 2-3 is common. In the SS Cyg FOV I have labelled and fully identified 7 comparison stars ranging from 7.55 to 14.92 V which covers the expected range of SS Cyg. There are several galaxies in the image as well so I have labelled and identified them. Their visual magnitudes fall between 15 and 16. As usual, I have included a few of my favourite literature references.
