Possible VSX catalog duplicates

Hello.
While using VSX, I noticed a possible duplicate variable star entry. ZTF19aaclksh and ZTF18abnbldg share identical coordinates. I verified their information: ZTF18abnbldg has coordinates 20 46 47.344 +17 13 05.69 (311.6972658 +17.2182467).

In addition, there are also the following similar duplicate entries of coordinates:

CzeV3617 = SERIV 169
SERIV 172 = CzeV3626
ZTF18abbogxd = ZTF18abacprn
KaiV115 = ASASSN-V J054436.36+405828.2

Best wishes,
Jiashuo Zhang

Thanks Jiashuo. We’ll correct them.

Sebastian

Hi.
I recently wrote a Python script to check variable stars across the entire VSX. I once again discovered some duplicate entries for variable stars.

Recently, the variable star search team I lead reported a batch of variable stars to VSX. During the waiting period for inclusion, there’s often uncertainty. Consequently, two variable stars were included in VSX twice. They are:
STSP J212207.73+471345.8 = AISV-BD J320.532+47.229
STSP J190906.59-030335.2 = AISV-BD J287.277-3.059
I checked the reporting times for these two variable stars. Their discovery should be attributed to the AISV-BD team.

Additionally, here are other duplicate variable stars:
V5416 Sgr = Gaia DR3 4050251466911384064
@Sebastian_Otero

Thanks Jiashuo, I have removed them from VSX.

Cheers,
Sebastian

Hello everyone, I have carried out a detailed inspection of the VSX data. Based on the VSX entries on VizieR, I used a cross-match radius of 2 arcseconds, then verified them on the VSX website, and finally confirmed them with Aladin.

I confirmed that the following entries are duplicates, including:

In fact, there are still many more suspicious duplicate entries, and I am checking them one by one.

@Sebastian_Otero Can you further verify their information and make the necessary corrections?

I just want to mention here that we are already addresing this in private.
But it is important to note that the fact that there are two identifiers for most of the objects Jiashuo is referring to as duplicates means that Gaia was able to split them in two stars. So they are not actually duplicates.

A 2" separation was used for these matches, but Gaia has split objects as close as 0.3". Thus we may be seeing spurious variability caused by mutual light contamination but not duplicates.
Sometimes one entry might be variable and the other one not. Sometimes both will be real variables. Sometimes both will be artifacts. It depends on their separation and their brightness.

If anyone wants to check for mistakes, inconsistencies and other problems with the current VSX data, you are welcome to submit revisions to VSX, following the guidelines in our site,the VSX manual, the VSX FAQ page, etc.
Remember that VSX has a “Do it yourself” concept.

If you want to go deeper and work on batch updates or large sets of revisions/corrections, you might want to join the VSX Team and get more involved. Just let us know.

Cheers,
Sebastian
