Observing Campaign #881: HM Sge monitoring needed for HST and SOFIA observations

View here: Details for HM Sge monitoring needed for HST and SOFIA observations

Abstract: Dr. Steve Goldman (Space Telescope Science Institute) writes: “We are requesting I-band and R-band photometry of HM Sge. The I-band helps us probe the pulsation of the red giant, while the R-band allows us to monitor the general brightness of the system. The I-band is particularly important.”

Justification: “The light curve of the Symbiotic Mira HM Sge has been changing in unexpected ways. We have published several journal articles (including AAVSO authors) using data from Hubble, SOFIA, and AAVSO, including data obtained in response to AAVSO Alert Notice 734 (2021). We are trying to understand the evolution and variability of this system after its recent outburst (1975). New observations will be important for providing a baseline for new Hubble observations as well as helping us understand the system’s evolution.”

To observers: The cadence of coverage for HM Sge requested has been revised. New cadence as of 29 January 2025: one observation in Rc and Ic per week is requested; more frequent observations are not necessary. Thank you and good observing! - Elizabeth Waagen, AAVSO HQ
