ASAS Identifier Anomalia

Strange and unexpected trouble: VSX (and SIMBAD, and MAST) can not find nice SR variable ASASSN-V J064519.21+151414.6 = ASAS J064519+1514.2.
LCG, VSP and VPhot work with the enigmatic star normal, other tested ASAS identifiers do not confuse VSX.

I just tried to find spectral class and was surprised by anomalia.

Hi Mikhail,

I can’t see anything unusual with this star in VSX. You can find it using any of the two names.

Cheers,
Sebastian

Thank you, Sebastian! Obviously, the problem lays on my side, but where?! I tested Opera, Firefox and Edge with the same strange result. I suspect our specific internet.

However, Peranso has similar trouble :frowning:

Perhaps it would help to omit (or ‘clear’) the star-name AF Psc from the form, since it does not apply to the ASAS star?

\Brian

It is just recent requests list, Brian, so cleaning does not help.
However, Peranso does not use browsers, which gives independent confirmation of anomalia. Maybe, my antivirus has bug???

I tried the last resort: computer reboot. It did not help.
I must learn to live with this :frowning:

I tried VSX search with Android smartphone. The star appeared, but with great delay. Ohhh…

Just another point of reference…

For me, VSX finds the star using either the ASASSN or ASAS identifier although it takes maybe 30 seconds before responding with the info

LCG finds both designation almost immediately.

SIMBAD doesn’t find the star using either identifier.

Strange.

Agree.
Thank you, Bill, for your tests!

(This reminds of the hidden planet Kamino, doesn’t this?)

Hi Bill and Mikhail.

Actually, it is not strange. SIMBAD and VSX are independnet databases.
We do use SIMBAD for name searches, but it is not a variable star database and thus, lots of variable stars in VSX won’t be included in SIMBAD.
Not all stars in the sky are in SIMBAD. ASAS or ASAS-SN stars are not included unless they have been published in some paper (not the survey catalog papers).
Gaia DR3 names do work (don’t ask me why) but if you want to search for variable stars, VizieR is the best choice because it includes all the objects in VSX plus the different catalogs that include data on the object, including variable star catalogs that may not have been imported to VSX yet.

Cheers,
Sebastian
