EDIT: Discussion of this transient has moved to the Observing Campaign #897 thread!
This has been a lucky month for southern hemisphere observers! It looks like there’s a new bright nova, this time in Vela. Congratulations to @Andrew_Pearce for the independent discovery!
Details below from Yusuke Tampo’s 13:43 UTC post to the vsnet-alert mailing list:
[vsnet-alert 28082] PNV J10251200-5331109: possible nova in Vela at 5.7 mag
In TOCP, John Seach (and independently Andrew Pearce) reported the possible
nova PNV J10251200-5331109 in Vela at 5.7 mag on 2025 06 25, possibly
another naked-eye nova!

Unfortunately, the weather in Sutherland seems bad for the next few days.
The coordinates given on the CBAT page are 10:25:12.00, -53:31:10.9
. Unfortunately, that negative declination and its proximity to the Sun mean that it’s not visible at all to observers north of +20N. However, those in the southern hemisphere should have a great view. Let’s see whether it continues to brighten like N Lup 2025 did!
Clear Skies,
Lauren Herrington
