With much sadness, we share the news that our former AAVSO staff member and good friend Richard “Doc” Kinne passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. Doc was first a volunteer and soon a member of the AAVSO staff from 2005 to 2017, focusing on IT. We were so fortunate to have Doc in our lives and working on behalf of the AAVSO. He was a kind, gentle, and sincere man, and patient with finding a way to explain technical things to those of us who didn’t share his intuitive understanding of technological esoterica. His enthusiastic love of electronics, computers, science, science fiction, fantasy, gaming, M&Ms and Coke (his steady diet), cats, anything and everything British, books, Esperanto, and more was endearing. After he left the AAVSO, Doc was a substitute teacher in the Boston area schools, and his students (and administrators) looked forward to their days with him – he really was a great teacher! Most of all, though, Doc was a truly good and decent person, and we remember him with thanks and great affection. We extend our deepest sympathies to Doc’s partner Arielle (Morgan), his family, and his many friends.

Remembered fondly,

Ah, that’s a great shame. He seemed a nice bloke. We had many email exchanges over the years about lots of different subjects. He was a big fan of the sci-fi Dr. Who, and could never understand why I didn’t like it.

Very sad news. I met Doc a few times at HQ and AAVSO meetings. Always a pleasure.
