Parenago Orion Sword catalogue

About 15 years ago Australian variable-star chart-maker Mati Morel prepared a revision of the well-known star catalogue of the Orion Sword region by Parenago. Although there is a CDS VizieR file for this list, it contains only the semi-accurate positions of Parenago's main table. The original publication itself had a supplementary table showing astrometric positions for about two-thirds of the stars, which was overlooked by the person who prepared the VizieR file. Mati went through the list very carefully using various modern images and catalogues to obtain accurate (~1") positions for the stars, looking into numerous ID problems in the process.
In 2023 I revisited this list to prepare a somewhat improved file. I examined every star using the Goddard SkyView utility and other resources. I have copied some additional information, including Parenago's spectral types, cross-IDs, and other details. As part of the process I examined the spectra for something like 1200 of the 2900+ stars in the GAIA3 and LAMOST4 catalogues to classify the stars. The table was matched against the HD/HDE, BD, and VSX catalogues. Double stars are noted as well, including ~100 new ones readily identified in GAIA3. Only approximate V magnitudes are added, mainly to remove the strong scale-error in Parenago's original photometry (even though it is remarkably good for having been done while Stalin was still in power!). This is a big area of the literature that requires much additional sorting out to get 'best' values, color-indices etc.
Many of the Parenago stars appear by name in SIMBAD when they are located in the main region around the Orion Nebula. Most of the outlying stars are not identified elsewhere. Among the applications is allowing one to find reliable non-Orion comparison stars in the region, which the GAIA3 distances and new spectral types help with. A number of problem cases remain, most likely from various errors in Parenago's list (compact nebular knots mistaken as stars, false images on plates, etc).
The file is copied to the Lowell ftp area:

…which is about 340Kb of flat text. I’ll be pleased to learn of errors and corrections.
