Editing my profile in this forum system

When I make a post, I am identified by my observer code, if you click on that you get my first name. I’d like to edit my profile so that my first and last name are displayed at the top of my post, rather than “BGW”. (Well, I’d like it if other people did so too, but I that’s up to them!)

How do I make such a change?

Thx, Gary Billings

I’ve been wondering about the identification as well. I looked in the profile but it wasn’t obvious how I could change this.
Thanks
Colin Haig

Hi Gary,

Your AAVSO username can be changed on the Edit Profile page: https://apps.aavso.org/member/edit_profile/.

Log out and back in to see it update on the forums.

Thanks,
Aru

Thanks for this, Aru.

To further clarify it for other users: it looks like you sign in to the regular AAVSO pages, then in the dropdown under your name (top right), go to Settings (not Profile) and there you can set your name as it will appear on Forum posts. If you try to edit your Profile in Forums, you can see what that name is, but cannot change it.

“HTH”, Gary

Except, that that didn’t work!

Trying again. Adding aslkdfowien so it exceeds min of 20 chars.

Okay, this time it did say I had successfully signed in, and quoted the new name I had specified. Let’s see what gets posted at the top of this. If it still says BGW, I haven’t succeeded.

Editing this post, after first posting it: It still shows BGW at the top of the post, so this is still not working.

Another edit: okay, went to another computer, running totally different OS, so not sharing anything with previous computer, and now all my (tiresome) posts show my new name!

More details on how I made the change:

login at regular aavso.org AAVSO home page
choose “my account”, “profile”, and at the top right will be your name
use the dropdown of your name to choose Settings: there you can change your name for the forums
Go back to the homepage and logout.
Hopefully now when you log in again and go to these new forums, you’ll see the new name even applied to previous posts (I had to go to this other computer to see it)
Good luck.

Thanks Gary,

Your post nudged me to try to change my own username (for the Forums).

This post will show whether or not it worked.

Roy

It’s not looking like it worked, Roy – your name still shows as ARX. But my name, as shown on my older posts here, has now switched to the new name. I don’t know exactly what was the key, but I seemed to have to be “thoroughly” signed out – not sure what that means though. Maybe signout of the AAVSO website, delete all additional browser tabs that might be still somehow signed in, close the browser, perhaps even reboot the computer? Good luck!

Hi Gary,

Yes, that’s right, and I haven’t made the time to try again until now. The funny thing is that when I went to another computer and opened my profile the new username I entered (Roy_Axelsen_ARX, because I liked the format you used) was in my profile. I re-saved it. Let’s see what happens.

Roy

OK, still no good. I’ll try some other strategies when I have time.

Hey folks - I tried this, and it only works if you go up to your icon in the upper left, and actually log out. Then close the browser. Come back to forums.aavso.org, and log in. Then it will update.
Otherwise it doesn’t take effect.

Thanks Colin, that’s great, and the updated username is applied not only to new posts, but also to all earlier ones.
