I am purchasing a used ATIK 383L. At 5.4 micron, the pixels are a little too small for my SCT. My question is what would be better, 2X2 binning or using the .63 focal reducer? What are some pros and cons of each. Would the FOV be too large with the reducer? Does the 2X2 binning reduce my dynamic range? Thanks in advance.
You didn’t say what aperture and focal length your SCT is. Generally, the smaller the field-of-view (FOV) of your telescope the harder it often is to get comparison stars in the same FOV.
Probably most of your questions may be answered using some of the calculators on the web site, link below. Run a few VSP charts of some variables you want to observe and see if the FOVs will give you at least several comparison stars in the same image.
