V488 Sge chart extension please?

I see this nova is getting close to the faintest in the current chart sequence, 130.

May we get a fainter sequence added please?

Also, perhaps, Sebastian can comment on the very close companions to the nova that will become visible and very likely inside photometry apertures in the not too distant future.

Thanks! :star_struck:

Hi, sequence extended to magnitude 17.0, suggest a very small FOV, say about 5 arcmin! I also suggested to HQ that they might like to announce the extension.

Downside is that I had to use Gaia as the errors in APASS were uncomfortably high, so no B data.

Thanks Michael!

Appreciate your efforts!

In the olde days… here we go again with the olde… :grimacing:
Charles Scovil would use the Stamford Observatory 22 inch to generate many AAVSO sequences. The 22 inch Gregory-Maksutov has been moved to New Mexico recently I see.

Anyway, it must be possible to extend the B magnitudes fainter not using published catalog material if the uncertainties are high, missing data in crowded fields, etc.. Is there a standard primary or secondary procedure to extend a sequence? A secondary magnitude for a few stars would be to pic some faint “normal” stars and make them unknowns, solve for the magnitude, and do this many times to generate a stable average with associated error estimate?

Would have to note ID info and the comp magnitude in your extended record notes field at a minimum.

It should be possible to use the ATLAS ‘refcat2’ survey g,r,i data to extend the sequences to fainter levels, and also to produce Johnson B magnitudes better than from APASS or GAIA. The transformations by Kostov & Bonev are entirely adequate for the purpose.

Thanks for playing Brian! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Perhaps we can get the sequence team to use this catalog in their AAVSO standard method of creating or adding new sequences, rather than me-myself-and-I rolling his own…! :cigarette:
