Tutorial on Canopus

Dear All,

I downloaded MPO Canopus v12 and I would like to learn how to use it.
I’ve found on YT many videos made by the developer himself, but they seem to explain each single feature in detail and honestly I don’t understand anything on how to start with it. I’ve been using AstroimageJ and Muniwin so I am not entirely new to photometry software, but still I don’t even understand how to start with MPO Canopus.
Do you know about any tutorial that explains A-to-Z how to do photometry with MPO Canopus?

Thanks very much!
Nicola

Nicole,
Write to Brian Warner: brian@minplanobs.org, or go to the forum MPOSoftware.
He is the author of Canopus

Hi Luis,

thank you. He made publicly available a lot of videos on Youtube. Unfortunately each of them explains how to use a certain section of the software, but doesn’t provide a workflow to start with. Therefore I am convinced he would only forward me to his videos…
I was more looking for some third party tutorial from some experienced photometrist.

Hello! I still use version 10 - wonderful for AAVSO photometry. And, there is a large user manual that explains everything.

I'll slowly get into version 12, but as you noted, it may involve more trial and error since there is not a comparable user manual available. I suspect that much is the same between versions 10 and 12, but differ in how the tools are presented, so if you get to know version 10, that might be a good way to get to know version 12 for future use.

Plus, version 10 is wonderful for ensemble photometry, and excels at multiple image photometry, such as for short period variables. Version 12 has some additional tools (such as taking into account Nemesis close companion stars), ability for more comparison stars and makes analysis of images that have multiple targets easier (especially useful for newer large format chips and telescope systems), but those are targets that I've not moved to yet, so I do not feel rushed to move to version 12. Best regards.

Mike
