Possible bright nova in Sagitta (V0488 Sge)

A 19th-mag eclipsing object has apparently undergone a classical nova outburst which should therefore be about mag 6 at maximum. I have just done a sequence (b scale) to 10th mag, source Tycho.
Position is: 19 45 06.49 / 18 12 42.2
Currently the object has no AUID so search by position.

It wasn’t an eclipsing binary, just another spurious result for a star that is too faint for Gaia to properly solve it.

This is the updated VSX entry.

Sebastian

Got this image last night from Glendale, CA, USA.

There’s also a nifty Z And type nearby, QW Sge.

Hello everyone,

We have just spectroscopically confirmed PNV J19450648+1822422 as an Fe II-type nova.

You can find the details here: ATel #18012: Spectroscopic Classification of PNV J19450648+1822422 as an Fe II-type Nova with Concurrent Photometry

Observed the nova last night at 2026-08-26 02:59:00 UT, estimated mag 7.1. Used a Celestron 8 Classic Orange.

Tonight I took another image of V488 SAGITTAE = NOVA SAGITTAE 2026. Seems about the same as last night. From Glendale, CA, USA.

Hey everybody,

I was able to take a spectrum of NPV JD19450648+1822422 yesterday.

This is so exciting!!!

Cheers!

Latest image from tonight. Hard to tell, but perhaps the nova seems slightly less bright than last observed by me two nights ago.

Hi All,

I’d like to thank you for sending photometry and spectroscopy of V0488 Sge. I received an email from Dr. Ryan Norris at New Mexico Tech indicating that he was appreciative of these observations. He’s received a few nights of data from CHARA on the novae and these will help a lot with his interpretations.

Regarding spectroscopy specifically, he says:

H-alpha and H-beta are useful and if someone has high enough resolution, Fe II 5169 and Si II 6347/6371 are useful.

Kind regards,
Brian

I imaged V488 Sge on August 30th again. This time H alpha is better split than on August 28th.

Comparing my spectra from 28th red and 30th blue the continuum has become fainter and so the H alpha seems to have got stronger.

Another 2 hour session on V488 Sge last night.
I see that the peak of H-alpha is moving toward the red side in the days from 28/08 to 03/09. The continuum is also getting weaker.
red 28/08
blue 30/08
green 03/09
