Nova Sgr 2026 No. 3 - Observations needed

Another bright nova discovered by the NMW-TexasTech transient survey! (observers are Katie Barnhart, Kirill Sokolovsky, Darien Perla, Pragati Acharya, John Worley, Vallia Antoniou and Elias Aydi)

The nova was discovered this morning and reported in ATel #17987, and confirmed spectroscopically less than 6 hours later in ATel #17989.

N Sgr 2026 No. 3 (TCP J18251276-2225293) is located at 18 25 12.75 -22 25 29.5 (J2000.0).

We will probably prepare and Alert Notice tomorrow and the Sequence team will work on a sequence as soon as possible, but in the meantime, just go out and observe it!

Reports to the CBAT “Transient Object Followup Reports” shows it around V= 8.7-8.8 with the latest observation having been obtained at 18.18 UTC.

Hi Sebastian,
I observed it last night remotely from ROAD in Chile.
The sequence team has to add brighter stars to the sequence as the nova is very bright (around mag 8.2 in V band).

Hi Josch,

Current sequence gets as bright as 7.0. Comp stars fit well on a C-scale chart.

From the finder chart, there appears to be a star a few arc-min from the nova? Mike

Unfortunately my FOV is not that large. I only get sequence stars down to Mag 10.

I added an 85 at 18 23 56.52 -22 02 33.7, but that’s the closer we can get. There simply aren’t bright stars closer to the variable.
