I had some observations of an eclipsing binary (RY Cnc) that I wanted to submit to AAVSO but I had never done this before. So I made this account and uploaded my observations expecting to get some feedback on acceptance, but I have heard nothing after one week. As far as I can tell, the observations are not in the database, so somehow they were not accepted. Can someone tell me what I should expect in terms of feedback? I did get an alert on the screen saying the magnitudes were not in a typical range for that object, but that is hardly a criterion given how bad the observations are that are already in the database for RY Cnc.
Thanks for the response. The data must have just appeared–it was not there when I sent my message yesterday.
Hi @dgary50 ,
Thank you for taking the time to submit your observations of RY Cnc and welcome to the AAVSO. We very much appreciate the effort that goes into collecting and contributing these data.
You are correct that AAVSO used to provide feedback for first-time submissions. Unfortunately, due to recent staffing changes we are not presently able to review newly submitted data in detail. Until then, I think the best method of getting feedback is to do exactly what you did, submit a request to your peers on the forums. We hope to resume data review later this year.
Concerning the feedback you received during the submission process, it is designed to encourage you to double-check your observations make sense relative to recent submissions. Most of the errors we see are zero point offsets (i.e. two parallel sets of observations offset by a constant value) which are easily spotted by eye, but difficult to find programmatically.
Kind regards,
Brian
