After an enforced break I tried to download my photometry output files from VPHot and it takes them straight to my downloads folder with a generic name like “file.txt” It does similar in Transform Applier although at least names them relevantly. Is this me or changes to VPhot because it’s a real nuisance. Help please.
It happened here when I went to Windows 11.
WebObs still goes to the last opened folder.
TA does not go to the folder opened by VPHOT.
TA and VPHOT dump everything in downloads.
A hundred extra clicks per night of data.
Ray
Thanks Ray,
I’m on WIN 10.
It has considerably added to my processing time.
Please can anyone at VPhot team revert it to previous. I fail to see what advantage there is in the change.
Kevin&Ray:
I’m not sure what you guys are referring to re: file names?
Tonight, my AAVSO Report had a usual name like - AAVSOReport_DE-Lyn_V_20160312.txt.
When I downloaded one of my images, it had a usual name with a long numeric name like - 2016311-1_images-638762950525612842.zip.
These are both normal. What are you getting? I’m still using Win10.
Ken
I’m using Win 10 and also getting what I would consider “normal” results. Nothing has changed in my .txt files.
Example screen shot below…
Hi
I am referring to the Save button always going to my download folder rather than the working folder or the last folder opened. That on Windows 11.
Result is that I always “save as”, then drill down to my working folder with a series of clicks. I counted clicks just now, and I was off by a factor of two.
So working with 15 to 20 stars per night and saving the TA files can require up to 200 extra clicks. The carpel-tunnel is beginning to flare up again.
Fortunately, when I go to WebObs (old version) and Choose File, it knows to go directly to the last folder opened when the TA file was written.
Things worked much better on Windows 7, it remembered the last folder written to. Unfortunately I have not been able to run VPHOT on Windows 7 for some months, which is not a problem, Win 7 talks to the observatory and I just move the files to Windows 11. But TA on Windows 11 doesn’t remember the last opened folder. VPHOT does not either. I stack images and download them, renaming the 18-digit name to something like T CrB. That way if the .zip file gets out of it’s folder into the wild, I can tell what field it is without scrutinizing the coordinates.
Ray
Ray, I’m getting the same on WIN10.
When clicking “download” it used to go to last folder save with a suitable name. Now it directy downloads to the download folder with no step or option to change this or name.
With “AAVSO report” then “create report file” it at least names the file but also sends it to “download” folder with no option to change.
With “Time series” method of B, V reduction route it is the same, naming the file (but with no option to change, so for multiple targets it names the first one and not the primary one) So a real nuisance.
Echoing your comment. Just had 3 clear productive nights after a SIX WEEK cloudy spell so very keen to get processed and uploaded. Some obs quite urget like T CrB and SU Tau. It has increased my processing workload massively. Please help.
Greetings,
Given that the browser is always saving the files in the Downloads folder, this is likely a browser configuration option, not an issue with VPhot.
Please see the links below for how to change the setting.
For Chrome, you need to enable the “Ask where to save each file before downloading” option. The “Change download location” portion of
Evidently, there isn’t a similar option in IE11
Kind regards,
Brian
Thanks Brian,
You were spot on with your diagnosis. For some reason Firefox re-set the download route without telling me. Apologies to the team for blaming VPhot and my ensuing panic.
Regards
Kevin
It was the browser. (Firefox in my case)
Hi Brian
It does work in Chrome, Win 11, but you need to select a specific folder.
I needed to search for the option in settings.
There is no option to save to the last folder opened.
If that folder is removed/deleted it defaults to Downloads.
Not really workable except by clicking through folders to store the star data properly sorted out for easy finding.
WebOBS actually OPENS the last folder used. I have not used it to save to folder.
Ray
Hi Ray,
What I read is that Internet Explorer removed the option to prompt the user where to save the files. I think it unlikely that we can do anything on our end to modify this behavior.
Brian
Thanks Brian
Wow, that is really strange.
Shame that every programmer has to debug every version of MS operating systems.
Ray
BTW I am using Chrome rather than Internet Exploder, so maybe Win 11 has the new “feature”.
I should try IE to see how it goes.
