Classification errors in VSX

Hello everyone,
during my recent search for variable stars, I discovered a celestial object.
According to ZTF data, it is an EA-type variable star. However, in VSX, it is labeled as GDS_J0641491-024920 (06 41 49.16 -02 49 20.3) and classified as a VAR-type variable star.
I originally intended to correct the information for this object, but I’m unsure about its period due to my inability to clearly discern whether it has a potential Min II. Therefore, I’m posting it here in hopes that someone can further confirm its parameters.

Best regards,
Jiashuo Zhang

Hi Jiashuo,

The Bochum Galactic Disc Survey published a catalog of variable star which was rather reliable but they did not assigned types to those variables.
When you say “VAR-type variable star”, that is not a variable star type, but the lack of it.
So this is not an “error”.

You should submit a revision, treating the object the same way as you always do when you submit stars.
If there isn’t any trace of a Min II, it might be that the period is twice as long with two similar minima. It depends.

I checked ZTF data and in this case there is no ambiguity because the system is eccentric. When the secondary eclipse happens at a phase different than 0.50, you can’t confuse Min II and Min II even when they are similar in depth.

For this star:
P= 1.95564
T0= 2459271.688
Range= 14.45 - 15.02 r
Eclipse duration 9%
Min II at phase 0.545. Duration 11%
Since both eclipses have the same depth (both in r and g), you can add a remark saying that “Primary eclipse might be the secondary.”

Best wishes,
Sebastian
