Photometry with an 8" SCT on an equatorial wedge

I’m posting this on the off chance it may help someone.

I acquired a Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 a couple òf years ago for visual observations, including school and public observing nights conducted by my local astronomy club.

I started to consider if the 'scope could be configured for variable star photometry, particularly time series over several hours each night. I didn’t want to commit money to an equatorial mount and instead bought a Celestron equatorial wedge for a few hundred dollars.

After several frustrating months the setup is now working and yielding uninterrupted (no meridian flip) time series over several hours each night.

The frustration was caused by my failure to find anywhere step by step instructions on how to drive the mount from a computer. In particular, I needed the ability to synch the mount to any position (not just to alignment stars).

I finally worked it out from a somewhat cryptic comment in an online forum.

In essence, the initial step is to connect the Celestron mount to the CPWI (Celestron PlaneWave Instruments) app, and commence the alignment routine. I then switch to my imaging app, which from that point on controls the mount and the camera.

If anyone wants more detail, message me offline and I’ll get back to you.
